The parish church of San Isidro Labrador in Lazi as well as it’s massive kumbento are cultural treasures that Filipinos should not only visit but be proud of.
Lazi is charming. Century old acacia trees, with its outspread branches, gives shade and cool on a rather humid afternoon. Old houses still abound. The people are pious and friendly. Always smiling.
It was unexpectedly a long and uncertain trip as I didn’t have any idea where the ruins of Mataguisi in Apayao are. But it was all worth it. It was a great adventure.
I stood mesmerized infront of that brick wonder. Its massive circular pediment with a huge rose window at the center, the finials, whirls and flora. Its circular belfry looks more like a wedding cake with its whitewash color and decorations of flowers, shells and diamonds was just a sight to behold.

I put on the headphones, searched for the song’s title, clicked PLAY when I found it, listened with anticipation and in a few seconds, I was brought to music heaven. Her voice was soulful, delicate yet evocative, as if she was singing especially for me. Matud nila, ako dili angay…
