One place that I really love exploring even local or in countries abroad are markets and fairs. You get a feel of the people’s culture, what they eat, what food and stuff they sell, what’s available locally and when we were in Takayama for the Hachiman Festival (Autuman Festival), we stumbled upon a temporary riverside fair.
It’s not really that big. A narrow stretch of road and bounded by two bridges mark this area. The stalls were also temporary, metal frames covered with plastic or cloth and local goods from fruits to vegetables, from decors to sweets, from practical things to knick-knacks. But it was interesting. There were different kinds of corn types in different colors. What looks like pumpkins in different shapes.
There were foodstuff from the usual rice based delicacies to hotdogs, fishballs and the like. Temperate flowers in pots were in bloom, paper balloons in the form of circus balls, puffer fish and beetles were being sold. Insect origamis, even those very small ones were there. Fruits in season, usually those that I can see in supermarkets back home.
The river was also a great landscape with all those ducks and large fish that one often see in movies and people feeding them or sitting by the riverside. Actually kind of surreal. You see these scenes from Japanese animes or movies or riverside scenes from European or American ones than you see it in real life.
I got fascinated.
