Looking for a cheap stay in Yogyakarta? The Capsule Malioboro Hotel & Cafe is a good budget option to stay and just a few minutes walk to the main tourist road.
I like capsule hotels and have stayed in several cities abroad. But unlike the traditional pods that started in Japan, I do prefer the so called space capsules. These are plastic pods, airconditioned with amenities inside with privacy to boot. It’s also secure with a sliding door that can be accessed via a keycard. If I’m on a tight budget, I do prefer staying at one like what I did in Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu and Singapore.

Yogyakarta is a popular city in Indonesia mainly for the stunning Borobudur and Prambanan temples, both listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Other than these two, I was in the city for a Niantic Ingress game. It was at The Capsule Malioboro Hotel & Cafe where I stayed for a few nights.
I booked my stay via the Agoda app because it was cheap, at less than PHP500 per night with breakfast already and was just very near Jalan Malioboro, the main tourist road. It’s clean with helpful, English speaking staff. The building has few big rooms with the pods installed at both sides leaving a spacious central area. Cleaning staff comes in everyday at a specific schedule. Assigned lockers are located in the same room as your pod.
The dining area is airy and bright and the breakfast provided is basic although you can order food too. While the hotel location is just at a secondary roadside, the space capsule building is a few meters away thus its not so noisy. There are lots of food options too outside the hotel ranging from restaurants to street food.
