One of the places that I really like in Alor Setar is the scenic natural park along the Sungai Kedah (Kedah River). There are lots of huge trees and benches that offer a cool and breezy shade with a beautiful view of the Dataran Tanjung Chali (Tanjung Chali Square) right across. It’s imposing tower is a landmark.
The square is a historical site and was once used as a harbour for many boats traveling between villages along the different rivers like Sungai Kedah, Sungai Anak Bukit, and the Wan Muhammad Saman Canal, considered the longest man made canal in Malaysia, when the river system was the main access inland. It was also the main hub of trade and as a repair area.
The square is now a tourist attraction and during night time, the tower is a favorite subject of local photographers. Dataran Tanjung Chali is located at Jalan Pengkalan Kapal in Alor Setar’s Kedah River waterfront.
