Naga City is known for its good food. The Magsaysay Ave. food strip is a popular hangout and dining destination for most families, friends and visitors. There’s a variety of restaurants and bars to chose from catering to different budgets. But for the vegan, there’s none. And you will be hardpressed where to look, unless you know Green Earth Cafe.

It was night time and Naga Excursions, the city’s arts, culture and tourism arm brought us bloggers to this quaint cafe for dinner. It has an interesting exterior and interior, with rustic touches that echoes local. I was told, this is the place where most foreigners based or visiting Naga City go to for good vegetarian food. And I think it’s the only one.

What I like most with vegan restaurants is the creativity that they meticulously pour over their creations. Here at Green Earth Cafe, that is quite true, without sacrificing taste. The cafe was established in 2006. The owners say 80% of the food is organic and majority comes from their farm in Pacol while the rest are provided by local suppliers.

I loved very much the pad thai. The spring rolls were unexpectedly delicious too, considering that I’m used to eating one with meat. The fruit and vegetable salad was quite interesting. It has a tofu and mint dressing with the latter exploding in the mouth, bringing a unique experience. The bopis, typically an offal dish still retains the taste of an authentic bopis, to some extent but differing only in the texture.

But when it came to dessert, specifically the banana-mango ice cream, I got perplexed. It’s not ice cream per se. More like sherbet but without the blandness. It’s tasty, yes, but to call it ice cream may not be the proper term. It has no milk and sugar and its kind of mushy but very fruity in taste.
