I was amazed at the selection of pieces, from well designed frames to wine bottle holders. From stylish trays to Christmas nativity tableau. And what made these all amazing? All were made from the humble bamboo! A friend, Eugene, promised to give me a bamboo smartphone amplifier and when I got to Iloilo, he brought me to the CM Bamboo Craft Center.

It’s a nondescript display center run by the Carmelite Missionaries as a social project intended to give livelihood to the poor and out-of-school youths. With these bamboo crafts, they supply major retailers and also provide bulk orders that are good as corporate giveaways.

What I do like about the products is that these are well designed, unlike what I’ve seen in some indigenous people’s shops wherein the items are badly in need of a good makeover. Here, there is a resident designer and I would say that you won’t be ashamed of giving these to friends or clients.

Other than decors and useful handicrafts, there are also religious items, souvenir key chains, cards, holders, lamps and many more and I didn’t imagine that you can do so much with bamboo. Other than the material is quite versatile, it is readily available and is eco-friendly.
